3D Oracle Sneaker

Exploring generative AI through the tool Midjourney, I created a series of fantasy sneaker concepts while experimenting with detailed text prompts and blended imagery. Working alongside a professional 3D Modeler with an extensive background in footwear tooling, we were able to expand on a 2D image, translating it into an original 3D virtual sample using the dimensions of a production last mold. The ultimate goal of this explorative series is to bridge the process of AI exploration with that of physical prototyping.

Some inspiration behind this concept was vaporwave, oracle bones, and the sclerotic ring of reptiles and dinosaurs most noticeably emphasized on the outsole detailing.

Last Digitization

Using a physical shoe last, I worked with the 3D modeler to create a digital shoe last from where the design would be built on. The idea behind this was to create an option to streamline an approved digital pattern/design into 3D printing as well as physical prototyping with a factory.

Initial Virtual Prototyping

Working in Rhino, I began to visualize the shoe on the last, focusing on how the outsole would look in real life. Depending on the development budget, blending or separating the outsole and midsole can impact the level of detail and the economic feasibility of the final mold.

Advanced Virtual Prototyping

During the initial prototyping phases, I chose to focus on developing the outsole for 3D printing. This required multiple revisions with the 3D modeler to make sure the prototype would be printed at the precise level of detail and measurements required for accurate physical sampling.
